Author Topic: Subscription only downloads  (Read 9453 times)

As a holder of a recently acquired Substance Painter Indie license what a disappointment to discover that Substance Source materials(minus the free ones) are only available for subscription users only. Please tell me I'm wrong and have missed something. Is there no way to purchase materials within substance source or some sort of subscription plan to Substance Source outside of subscribing to a piece of software?

Hi @ray_2204

The Substance Source downloads are only for the people who subscribe to Substance, our offer that allows people to always use the latest version of Substance Painter, Substance Designer and Substance B2M, and to have 30 downloads on Substance Source each month.

If you are interesting in getting access to Substance Source downloads you can subscribe to Substance for a short period of time, for example if you need 30 material downloads you can subscribe for a month.
The downloads do not decay even when you are not subscribing anymore, so you won't lose them if you unsubscribe.
There is no separate plan only for Substance Source.

Since when did this happen, when Substance Source released and months after, members that purchased a License or upgraded were rewarded with download points and now your telling me you're forcing ppl to subscribe in order to get these downloads.... your kidding me. Everyone hates subscritions, just take a look at your steam feedback. I've always defended you guys, but now .... just dont know anymore

Hi @spiritualcore

When Substance Source was released in 2016, download points were given to the owners of perpetual licences of Substance Painter, Substance Designer and Substance B2M.
However, that was an exceptional thing to celebrate the release of this new service, and after the release points were not given to people who purchased or upgraded their permanent licences.
It has always been advertised that Substance Source was part of the Substance subscription (called Substance Live at the time).

This is the exact same topic I have a big problem with as a early purchaser of Substance Painter licence. I discovered this today as I just upgraded my perpetual licence and was interested in buying materials from Substance Source to add more  to my collection. I was able to buy these before and expected to get many more over time as this is the only market of these materials but was shocked to see that I couldn't - with the attached message that notes that I can't purchase any without having a subscription.
As a perpetual license holder my plan was to occasionally but continually keep upgrading to the latest version.  I expect many owners of perpetual licenses will keep Substance Painter upgraded this way.  But you only let the new subscription buyers access to purchase Substance Source materials? Even though perpetual license holders will all be likely be keeping upgraded to the latest!?  This is a hideous way to treat the original purchasers of this software! You need to change this ridiculous sales model - absolutely never seen a worse model for the early purchasers of a software product!

Hi @Storm78

Since Subatnce Source was created several years ago it has always been included in the subscription.
The points you had at one point were given to you to allow you to discover the service, but it was never said anywhere that Substance Source points were included with the perpetual licences of Painter.

If you are interested in getting a few materials of Source it is still possible! You can get a subscription for only one month, cancell it before it renews so you are sure you only pay once. You'll get 30 download points, and you'll be able to keep them after you have unsubscribed as the points do not decay, so you can use them as you need them.

The approach of subscribing for one month to get access to the downloads will work.

Just have one question - You note it's 30 points you get with the monthly subscription except the Substance Source site notice (the above image) notes that "you have access to 30 downloads". Is 30 points the same as 30 downloads?

Yes, currently 1 point = 1 download = 1 material/atlas

I have to admit that approach where you can just subscribe for 1 month to get assets is not so bad after all.  Thanks
