Author Topic: Mark V Diving Helmet  (Read 2662 times)

Hi,

I've been working on making some old diving gear for my portfolio - and, of course, with the great help of Substance Painter - which to me, has to be one of the biggest leaps in the 3D world that I can think of, for a long time.
Anyway: one out of 5 items I made is a Mark V diving helmet.  I went with the coppery look for this, since it is rather iconic, and hopefully I managed to capture its look!

Programs used were: Maya, 3DS Max, ZBrush, Substance Painter 2 and rendered in Marmoset.

Thanks so much for looking!

Pretty neat! I'm going to share it ;)

Thanks for that ;)

I'll post the other old diving gear items during the week!

Very nice.

Did you see the Mythbuster's episode where they tested what happens to a diver if there is a hose leak while he's deeply submerged?  The myth was that he would be squished up into the helmet for a horrifying (but quick) death.  The results were surprising.

Ha, ha :)  No, I didn't see that one.  When you say 'surprising', then I expect it went splat? :)

Yes, it was a disgustingly and horrifyingly successful test of the myth.

They made "meat man" to simulate a human.  Probably lots of pig parts; I don't recall the details.  The lowered him to a realistic depth and opened a valve to simulate an air hose breaking.  Spoiler alert... the suit acted like a giant toothpaste tube and squeezed him into the helmet until it was entirely filled.  Eeeww.

I'm sure there are longer videos that include the discussion of the myth, the planning, and the building, but this one pretty much gets straight to the test.

P.S.
I think I'll stick to snorkeling, thank you very much.  ;)
