Substance PainterSubstance Painter - Discussions - Texturing a cave
 on: August 20, 2016, 02:31:31 pm
I´m making a game in Unity and I have made a couple of caves that I now want to texture. I want to paint the whole thing in SP of course but how do I go about doing that? The best thing would be to paint it as one big mesh but I guess it will be terribly low-def then because the cave system is pretty big. So I´m thinking I have to cut the mesh into smaller corridors and paint them individually? And then piecing them back together in Unity.

But what about the seams between the pieces then? The texture won´t line up properly right?

The page in the FAQ should be clear enough : the Allegorithmic folder contains only the resources that we provide by default. Any resources that you create should go in the folder next to it (and not in it). If you delete the right folder you will loose nothing.

In case you are not sure, just create a copy of the main "shelf" folder.

I´m sorry but I cant find a FAQ.

I think I found the place where my material presets are stored, is this right?
C:\Users\"user name"\Documents\Substance Painter\shelf\presets\materials

Okay I found why.
In the bottom layer of your layer stack, there is a fill layer with a empty bitmap for the Normal channel. Add a bitmap there temporarily and then remove it or just disable the channel. That's should clear the issue. :)

That seemed to do the trick! It works great now, thanks man!  ;D :o

Like I said before, I think I messed up my Unity 5 Metallic preset, you gave me a link that explained how to reset the shelf to fix that problem. But I´m still a little worried that it will delete all the materials I made? Is there really no way to backup the materials? The ones I made are regular materials and not smart materials.

If you imported them in the project rather than placing them into your shelf, then the only way to "get them back" is by creating a smart material. You can't extract a substance otherwise.

I rightclicked and picked "Create material preset" which put it in the Material section. They are in the shelf even if I start a new project, but I was wondering if I could make backups of them if something went wrong.

If you can give me a download link it would be perfect (such as a dropbox link).
Or if it's small enough, by e-mail (you can find my e-mail on my profile here on the forum).

Try this:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/gps8xrd0ul7qkz9/project.zip?dl=0

You can save your layers as Smart Materials if you want to use or save them outside of a project.
See :
- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B3oruU-cgUU

But they are not smart materials, just regular ones.

Is there a way to make backups of the materials I have made inside of painter? I can´t really find them anywhere outside of Painter? And I assume that the materials and stuff that I import doesn´t get deleted or anything if I update Painter?

8
Hmm really strange.
Can you send me your project ?
Also can you attach your log file ? https://support.allegorithmic.com/documentation/display/SPDOC/Exporting+the+log+file

Sure, how do I send it to you?

9
Can you export the same project as in your video but with the "Document channels + Normal" preset ?
If it works with this preset, you probably have an issue in the preset that you modified. The easiest way to reinstall the default preset is to do the following procedure : https://support.allegorithmic.com/documentation/display/SPDOC/Shelf+is+empty

That makes the normal look like this:

I recorded this, don´t have a mic to explain things but I hope you can spot whats wrong. I might have messed up the unity 5 export preset, There was some things I changed there but I cant remember what haha

Without much more information I won't be able to help you.
Can you show your project, or explain a basic setup to reproduce your issue ?
Does the problem happen with every project ?

Im making new materials so i added a normal and a ao channel to my document. I put my textures in the appropriate slots in the material, add the materials to my mesh and export the textures and then the normal look as above.

Another thing, do I have to use Designer to get metallic materials to look correct? When i add a metal-mask in Painter nothing really happens, and is there no way to adjust the metalness when i added the mask?

Designer and Painter are really great programs but I can´t really get a grip on how to make new materials with the correct values and so on, do I have to use Designer or is Painter enough if I have all the textures needed. Its hard to explain things here too especially since im Swedish and English isn´t my first language :/

Hi,

You don't need to use Substance Designer for the textures in Painter. You can do everything in Painter. Can you post some screen shots of the issues you are having? I'm not sure I understand what you mean by the metal mask and not being able to adjust it.

When you create the metallic channel, any layers you add will have the ability to affect the metal channel. You can use a standard layer to paint metal values or use fill layers to set a value. The biggest thing to think about is how the layers you add may affect metal channel.

Cheers,
Wes

Substance PainterSubstance Painter - Technical Support - Cant import shaders
 on: September 23, 2015, 03:06:49 pm
Here is yet another problem I have:

I downloaded the PBR Specular Gloss from Substance Share and placed it into the folder where the other shaders are. Restarted Painter and of course nothing happens. The shader doesn´t show among the others.

I contacted gametextures.com on how to make materials out of their textures and they recommended me to install this shader in Painter.

Hard to say without seeing a screenshot or something, but somethings I might speculate are that with your materials being non reflective, Unity uses a glossiness(smoothness) map instead of a roughness map which are basically inverts of each other. So if you created a roughness map that was very dark, meaning smooth, and you import it into Unity to use in the smoothness input, it's going to show the opposite of what you intended. So if that's the case you just need to invert the map before you import it into unity.

I tried using both roughness and metallic map but they are both non-reflective, even tried inverting the map without improvement.  The material looks great and I do believe that the light behaves different when i add the metal or rougness-map but the problem is that it is totally non-reflective = 0% metallic. When I add a metal-map to my material there is no way to adjust the "metalness", thats the problem.

14
I´m just throwing questions on here because I really don´t get a lot of this... When I have exported my textures into Unity and add them to a material the material is 100% non reflective. And when I have added a metallic or specular-map I cant adjust the metalness anymore. Where do I adjust this?!
