Thanks, that makes sense!

Whats up with some of the nodes in 2019.0.1 looking like a National Geographic Magazine?

What's the meaning of the yellow border?

Lots of reasons to be concerned about this, given what's happened with many other companies undergoing similar acquisitions in the past.

Reading through these 17 pages of comments, it's clear there is a lot of anger, especially about the licensing situation. Truth is, we don't know what will happen with that, not yet.

What I want to know is: why should we be excited about this?

I don't mean that in a rhetorical, facetious manner. I literally mean, why should we be excited?

Allegorithmic staff in this thread are basically just trying to pacify and put out fires about licensing. Why don't you expound on why this is a good thing? Let's give them the benefit of the doubt, not just assume that they've been tempted to potentially fuck up their entire creative ecosystem just for the sake of some extra cash for the executives: there might be some really good, creative reasons for this merger. What are they?

In other words, what benefits will all this bring to the Substance suite of tools? Because I feel like that question hasn't really be answered.

I'm quoting this post because it really hits the nail on the head (in a level headed way).

Substance DesignerSubstance Designer - Discussions - Re: Dependencies

That could very well be the problem (dependencies being on a different drive). I will check that out, thanks for the help!

Substance DesignerSubstance Designer - Discussions - Dependencies
 on: August 22, 2018, 09:42:45 pm
With the latest version of Designer, every time I receive a Substance with dependencies from someone else, I have to manually select the all the dependencies even though they are in the /dependencies sub-folder.

It looks like the full path to the dependency is being stored, instead of a relative path.

Could this be changed so it always looks in the /dependencies subfolder? Or if I select a different folder, and it also find other missing dependencies in that folder, it asks if it can use those dependencies?

Ah right, I get it. So instead of the color of the pixels in the input image being blended with Add/Sub, it's the (single) random color that is applied to that instance of the pattern which controls if it's blended with Add or Substract. That's good to know :)

Thanks for the help!

Thanks for your answer! It's really nice to have you be so active on the forum :)

I checked again, and it doesn't work for the Grayscale version of the Tile Sampler. Please see the attached SBS. None of the black areas in the input image are being substracted.

Or am I misunderstanding something?

I can get the effect that I want in a different way, but it would be nicer if things would just work as expected.

I want to add that for the Tile Sampler / FX-Node, the Add-Sub blend mode is broken (and overrides to Add blend mode only)

More info here:

https://forum.allegorithmic.com/index.php/topic,17885.msg76769

Which is a shame, because with Add/Sub blend mode in the Tile Sampler you could do a lot of cool things.

I understand this can't be fixed because it would wreak havoc with backwards compatibility, but are there any plans to create a new Add/Sub blend mode that does actually work?

The new Shape Splatter nodes may be of help. They have been added to the latest release, and let you do height aware splatter of shapes.

Another way would be to use a Tile Sampler Grayscale to make a heightmap of the leaves, and then apply the color afterwards (which in my opinion is the wrong way round, but because of the way Designer works this is the way things needs to be done).

In the latest video with Designer tips, one of the things discussed is setting Uniform Colors to 16x16px size to speed up the graph.

If this is really such a big deal, why isn't this optimized internally and save us that needless micro management?

Thanks for letting me know!

I'm using 2018.2 build 149. The histogram is pretty much the same for 8-bit and 16-bit nodes

It could very well be that the histogram is an accurate display of the distribution of the values. But because images often have  a lot of black or white values, this crushes the Y axis too much.

Photoshop is doing some kind of adjustment for this to keep the histogram readable. Please see the attachment: the value for black and the next lighter value (dark gray) have the same height in the histogram, despite the black area being much larger in size.

Compared to Photoshop, the histogram in the Levels node doesn't show any useful information: it's mostly a flat line. See attachment.

It would be nice if the scaling of the Y-axis would be so that it has useful information (ie. ignore the very largest peak so that the rest of the histogram is scaled bigger).

Being able to read the histogram is good when I want to know if my levels node is clipping the output for example.

In a function, is it possible to detect if a GetFloat has no node attached (ie. detect a null value somehow, and drive an IF node)

I'd like to be able set a default value of 1.0 when no node is attached, but override that with another value by attaching a node (like 0.5 or 0.1) when needed.

Hi,

In Designer you can create a graph function. Does something like that fit your needs or do you need something else ?

Hey Luc, thanks for the reply.

Sorry, I was not clear, I am already using a sub-function. It's a function for helping with exposing parameters (to make them blend in at certain values). For every exposed parameter, I need to setup the function network again (see attachment). The static floats need to be tweaked for each parameter, so I cannot put them inside the sub-function.

I need to add this function to a lot of parameters, and while it's not a big amount of work, it's kind of annoying to have to make 5 floats, attach them, etc. So it would be great if I could just drop in a single function, and the parameters could be set inside the properties panel of that function.
