Substance plugin for UE4 keeps unlinking my files and making me remake/bake the textures when I send them to painter to edit them (although it still shows that the textures are there). It’s as if it didn’t exist and starts over. What’s odd is that it’s not all my assets but it’s a good majority. Would really like to figure out what’s going on and how to fix this as I am dealing with a large game project and it’s becoming an issue for our work flow. Got some assets with lots of work into them and remaking them just when I’m trying to edit them.

Any help would be much appreciated thank you!

I am running the plug-in on 4.25

@P_White6 ,

Can you post a video or outline the steps you follow in order for us to repro this? :) (Also what version of Substance Painter?)

I have Unreal Engine 4.25.4 and the Substance Painter LiveLink installed.

My Substance Painter version is 6.2.2.

My issue is that when I right-click on an object on my Unreal Engine assets browser and press "Send To Substance Painter",
with substance painter opend, it makes the link with the object in Substance Painter,
but it creates a black texture in Unreal that can't be refreshed, and the following message appear.

@Youcef Dermoun 0 ,

Are you able to share the mesh that this is occurring with (and any associated files necessary for us to reproduce this)?

Solved - I clicked 'Generate' upon import.

Figured it would have done it automatically.

@gallystops ,

Is this happening only when you download Substance sbsars from Substance Source? Or is this also happening when you import Substance sbsars manually?

The Substance Source side of the plugin doesn't create the materials correctly when you download them (although it does download the sbsar and creates a Substance Graph Instance). I believe this is because Substance Source still tries to create deprecated USubstanceTexture2Ds instead of using the new format UTexture2Ds.

Substance Integrations - UE4 - Re: Texture Glitch

Hey guys,

i just started using the Substance Plugin for Unreal and came across 2 problems i could not solve.

1. When i try to download Substance Materials inside Unreal Engine via the Substance Source Tab i get the Error that Materials cannot be downloaded or UE Editor crashes when i just try to login into Substance Source in the Engine. So either way Substance Source is absolutely unusable for me in the Engine.

2. Now as i cannot download inside UE i just get materials from Substance Source externally and download them to a folder in windows and import them into Unreal. As far as i understand, the Substance Plugin recalculates the Texture inputs when i adjust the parameters of my material inside the engine. When i import a Substance Material inside UE and try to use it i get some weird "stepping effect" kind of glitch in the textures. On some of the wood planks there is some pixel offset going on completely destroying the correct look of the wood. It happens with other materials too. You can see the glitch in the screenshot. I tried to find online what's wrong but i can't find a thread describing that problem.

Is there anything i'm doing wrong or is it a bug/problem occurring only on my system?

Thanks for your help!

@Niandra1357 ,

Yes the Substance Source section of the UE4 plugin is currently not working as intended as you mentioned. What Substance sbsar are you using from Substance Source so I can take a look?

UE 4.25.4

I receive this message when trying to import some SBSAR files. Some of them will import from the same folder, while others will not. Anyone?!?! Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much. Not sure if there is anything on Designer's end I should be adjusting or not.

Hey @Dominic Sagona 1 ,

Were you able to find a solution? If not, can you post a Substance sbsar that shows the issue? (a .sbs file would also help if you made the Substance files yourself :) )

I've been struggling with this too but my download count keeps going down even though there is an error. How does that still register if there's an error regarding the number of downloads? Thanks

Substance download error! (is the actual error I copied from the message window)

@gman360 ,

It might still be registering that you 'downloaded' the asset even though there was an error and might still mark it as owned. If you go on the website ( can you see the assets in your 'My Assets' section at the top right?

I've been struggling to add materials to my project using the substance plugin for Unreal. If anybody has had this issue and can point me in the right direction will be highly appreciated.

Hey @Valkyr ,

Thanks for the report! We're looking into this.

In the meantime as a workaround, you can use the Substance Source website to download your Substance files ( and import them manually in UE4.

Thank you for your answer @-kg- :)

I know you guys will fix it when it is ready and I'm glad it will be soon.

I was just worried that it might be abandoned.

Thank you.

Hey guys,

The UE4 Substance plugin was released today that fixes the livelink issue in 4.25 and the latest versions of Substance Painter. Try it out and let me know if you have any other problems. Thanks! :)

@spineclinic  @Cpt.Sloth1992 ,

Do you have a project that we can use to repro the issue? Also can you provide the exact steps used so we can also narrow down the issue?

Hello there,

Just wanted to ask if there is any progress on solving this issue? :)

Hey @rook_ofc ,

We have a fix for this issue in the build on our side, but there have been some issues that have cropped up that we are trying to solve before we release. Hoping to get that resolved soon, sorry for the delay. :(

Hi there!

Seems like the Substance Plugin for UE4 (built from Source - 4.23 release branch) doesn't cook textures when building for Nintendo Switch. Every material using Substance falls back to Unreal default material.
Works perfectly on PC build.

Is this a known issue?
Or is there a specific version for Switch development?

I just copied the Marketplace plugin into my UE4 source build - do we need to compile a Substance Plugin source with the engine? If yes - where to get the source?

Substance is awesome, but without being able to build for Switch we can't use it in out project.
Thanks for your help!

best regards,

Hey , is correct. The Substance plugin for UE4 4.23 does not have runtime support for Switch. You would need to bake out the textures to use them.

Title crashes when exiting the game because the material created in substance is too big.

someone experienced the same problem ?

Hey @Issam HANINE 1 ,

What version of UE4 + Substance Plugin? Also are you able to post the .sbs file (if you created the Substance file yourself) or the .sbsar file?

Hey guys,

We have a fix in for this and are in the process of testing it. We should have a release within the next week or so. Thanks for your patience, and sorry for the inconveniences to your projects/workflows. :(

In the meantime, there is a workaround (I posted this above):

The latest versions of Substance Painter (6.2.0, 6.2.1) seem to be having problems with the dcc-plugin side of it and UE4. I looked a bit into it, it seems to work as expected if you use Substance Painter 6.1.3 and below.

basically importing a sbsar file. its 23 megs. not big at all. but it hangs on import after clicking import from the dialogue that comes up to confirm the file. any thoughts?

@BobbyR ,

Is this a Substance sbsar you made yourself? Can you link the Substance Designer .sbs file? I can take a look.

Any update on if/when this is likely to be fixed? Currently, we're abandoning the substance plugin and baking textures external to Unity because whilst our programmers can hack around having a broken material inspector, our art team can't.

@ferretnt ,

Apologies for the delay, and for the annoyances this bug has caused your team. We have a fix for it now in QA along with some other bug fixes. We hope to post the 2.5.3 plugin to our discord beta group this week/early next week, then later to the asset store.

If you wanted to join the discord beta group to get the plugin before we post to the asset store let me know your discord name+numbers and I can add you.
