Hmm, your right it was that simple, turns out during switching between unity and designer I must have opened a phantom version of substance 4. Didn't realise I had it installed. Opened in Designer 5 and uninstalled Designer 4 and its shortcuts to avoid confusion. All seems fine now.

Thanks :)

Hi,

I was working on a substance in designer and had a bunch of parameters exposed. I could tweak them, change description and the rest fine. As I continued I noticed that all of them suddenly went missing from the Input Parameters tab in the graphs settings. The other parameters in other graphs also now suffer from the same issue. As far as I am aware I did not change anything that should make this happen. Even stranger the parameters are still acting as exposed both in the node and also visible and useable when I use the substance outside of designer (e.g Unity).

It appears there is a problem with just the viewing and editing within designer as they don't show up in the parameters drop down list. As I set up multiple parameters fully, if possible I would rather not clear them from the node and re expose them, especially as it still technically works. New exposes do not appear to show either anyway.

Any advice?

Thank you

I tried the method and unfortunately it does not work.
The work around I tried that rid the marks is a simple case of deleting the layer altogether, ignoring it or painting until the 'entire' layer is filled with the pattern (until it will not paint anymore) and then simply erasing the black marks. However, having tried the latter I found that the broken layer broke again so it is probably worth ignoring/deleting it and not taking the risk.
Sadly all these methods mean erasing the layer of its contents and as this issue can trigger midway through working on a layer (which happened the first time I encountered it) It can be quite a setback depending on how much painting and work was done before the marks appeared. I am also unsure if there is any link, but all times this has happened, it seems was after a save. As I save often, I am unsure if this only happens after the save, or it can happen whenever and I simply discovered it after but I have never had it on a brand new project, only layers that existed or were created after a save have broke so may be worth mentioning.

As an issue it is a very minor one as in most cases a broken layer can simply be avoided, but due to the chance of lost work I thought I should keep you up to date with problems behavior.

*Edit*
Oh the chances, I take it back, I created a brand new layer and it broke as I tried to paint on a project that has yet to be saved. I simply deleted and made another layer that was fine but saving obviously has no effect on its chance.

Sure, anything that helps :)

I usually have Firefox or Chrome up as well as Steam and avast (often in the background). I don't run anything that directly effects painter that I know of.

The markings on the texture remain the same every time I paint the same on the layer, even after closing without saving what I had done before. However I do notice that it matters where I paint on the layer. If I paint a tiny line on only a small part of the model, only some of the markings show, if the paint covers more of the model, more of the model gets the artifact, but the final shape of the marking remains the same. It gives the impression that it is filling in UVs with black, but looking at the 2D texture, its placing rectangles/squares of black over the whole image regardless of UV shells.

Below is a video that shows what it looks like in the 3D window, and then the 2D. You can see the rectangles passing over the whole image, as well as building up.

I also tested the layer by changing the projects model to a different one and the same layer still makes black boxes over the model. So I'm not sure it can be UV related.

I have posted a video of the issue and my hardware specifications a couple of posts before. Is there any spec in particular you need to know?

I have grabbed a few more screenshots showing the full window and the layer in question. The first is before painting on the layer, the second is after, the third is all other layers hidden and the fourth is a different angle.

It definitely seems to be a broken layer. It has happened a few times before on both layers being worked on and brand new ones like the one shown. Hope it helps.

Hi,

I have updated my drivers but the issue remains. every so often a layer will decide not to paint properly and generate the black marks you see in the video. I have made another model and managed to texture without any issues. I am unsure as to what causes it or why it effects the layers/models it does, as it seems to happen randomly. I question if its something I do to the layer that breaks but it happens sometimes on new untouched layers, and I wondered if it was the models but it does not always repeat if I start again.

The current driver version is 344.48
I may update them to the latest and see how it performs.

I have found that the issue seems to stick to a layer. I have had it a few times with both layers that I had been working on previously with no issue and contains texture/paint information on them, and some that are brand new and added with no changes made. It does not seem to matter what settings are on the layer or what layers are before and after it, they just seem to break when painted on. Moving the layer into a different order also does not fix it. It seems avoiding the layer and making a new one does allow you to continue but this can be unfortunate if you where halfway through working on the layer. I am unsure as to what is causing it and I come across the issue at seemingly random points.

Thanks

Hi,
Sadly I am still having this artifact issue. I originally thought it was due to the size of the brush but as the others stated it is not. It appears to be when I paint on certain parts of the model. This did not occur earlier, but randomly at some point decided to start with this model so I decided to record and place it here via a YouTube link.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=emX3CRDGkyE&feature=youtu.be

As you can see it actually adds the black marks to the texture and can even be painted on. It is a strange issue.

My hardware is:
Windows 7
Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU 920 @ 2.67GHz
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460

Thank you and I hope it helps,
Chris

Hi,
I'm getting the exact same issue  :(, I find it happens for me when I select a brush stroke and enlarge the brush size. When small the artifacts do not appear when painting but when when larger I get the same black marks on my texture, usually at the top and the bottom of the model.
Any answers to this issue would be great.

Hi Wes,
The models I tested where created in blender (apart from the sample projects) and I did not come across the issue. When a layer with any paint/texture is applied, when I up the resolution to 2k or 4k the program crashes along with my Display Driver. I have discovered that if the texture begins in 4k I can paint (albeit slowly) without a crash and applying a fill layer also causes no issues. Downgrading the size then upping it, or going back down, painting over on a lower res then upping it does not cause the crash as often.
One of my test models (A sphere with an intentionally higher poly count) had no issues most of the time but I did manage to get the crash once or twice, but still seemed a lot more reliable. This was caused when raising the size to 4k like my main model but unlike it, not every time.

I am leaning towards it being a problem with what my computer can handle as I'm guessing starting at a 4k resolution then painting over time is less demanding than raising an entire texture, however I am confused as to why a model with a higher poly count can be more reliable, or why painting at 4k, lowering the resolution, painting over and then raising it again all at once does not crash.

I have updated the software and the issue remains

Thanks,

Chris

Hi

I have a peculiar issue in painter in which when I change the texture size to 2k or above my display driver crashes. As far as I can tell I cannot recreate the issue with any other model even when they are more demanding such as higher poly. The sample projects work smoothly at 4k and when I specifically make a more complex model to test it (within reason) it has no problem working. Could it be the model?
The issue does happen even with earlier versions of it that are even simpler and I can't figure out what is causing it. It was created in blender, is there a known issue that can cause this that may be on my model?

I have checked that nothing else is in the scene as well as no history or modifiers. The uvs seem fine and the size is not large or out of the ordinary.

My Hardware is the following:

Windows 7
Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU 920 @ 2.67GHz
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460

Thanks
Chris

Ok perfect. Thanks for the reply :)

Hi I was just wondering what Bitmap2Material light means in Substance designer. I know it generates a material from an image but is that usable for commercial use? I own the Indie pack and therefore own bitmap2material as well as substance designer but the fact its called light throws me. Does this mean its just a small version inside designer, or does that mean its a demo incorporated into it. Can I use this node for commercial sale of games or substances/assets?

Thanks

Hi Wes,

Works perfectly, much smaller. Thanks for the help, really appreciate putting it in the next update as well.

Many thanks ;D,

Chris

Hey,

I have tried to open it in designer and have tried to drag the graph in but it is locked and will not load in.

Thanks
