Author Topic: Export Geo from Houdini for Substance Painter  (Read 5337 times)

Hey, hoping someone can advise me.

How should I export a geo from Houdini for use in Substance Painter?

I am currently exporting a simple obj.  Despite assigning uv's, groups and materials in Houdini, once exported I can't seem to access the textures sets once it is imported into Substance Painter for painting

any thoughts?

Can you attach an example file ?
Don't forget your log file. It can be exported from the Help menu of the software.

I just sent a reply on the Houdini forums but I'll repeat here in case anyone else wants to see.

Using the fbx export worked for me. (File>Export)

- Group your geos into the material sets (done)
- Use a material sop to set the materials (done)
- Export as FBX instead of obj (you need that shelf tool for obj to work)

Importing the FBX into Substance Painter creates texture sets from the material sets. The shelf tool in the Houdini forum just allows the same with obj as far as I can tell.

My understanding (which may be wrong) is that Houdini doesn't natively support mtl files. OBJ files need the mtl for material sets. FBX includes the material sets inside so it doesn't need an mtl.

You could use quick material SOP node, it's even faster)
