Author Topic: Progress Indicator for Iray rendering  (Read 1913 times)

For the Iray rendering in the 3D View, you can set Max Samples and Max Time.  I assume it quits at whichever limit it hits first.

It would be nice to have some sort of Iray render progress bar at the bottom of the 3D View window.

Maybe you need two thin bars, doing % Done based on Max Samples, and % Done based on Max Time.

That would make it much easier to know when it's done rendering, without having to monitor something like Windows Task Manager.

P.S.
In the 3D View window, under "Renderer" you spell "IRay" with a capital "R," but Nvidia only capitalizes the first letter; "Iray."  It's trivial, I know, but I figured I'd let you know.

I have to agree with you : I think just a red (when processing) or green (when done) could be enough, but we definitely need this feedback.
Dont hesitate to share your idea on http://allegorithmic.uservoice.com/forums/257908-substance-designer

@Vincent,

Thanks for the support.

Isn't that other forum essentially a duplication of this one?  To which one does Allegorithmic pay more attention?  I'll duplicate my entry over there anyway, per your suggestion.

Allegorithmic pays attention to both of them don't worry  ;)
The point with uservoice.allegorithmic.com is that the community can vote, therefore it gives a Precious feedback to prioritize their work.

For example, some ideas that receive a lot of votes may be reprioritized in the dev TODO list.

I have to agree and yes a simple light to show rendering would be enough.
The user voice thing needs a better interface imo much easier to follow on here.
But I will add my vote if you post a link to the request.

Thanks, and also thanks for posting the link to the UserVoice posting.  I meant to crosslink, but only did one.  Glad you had my back.

A slight variation on my request, based on other people's comments...

Yes, a simple "progress" bar would be fine.

But...

Base the progress on whichever criteria is closest to finishing.
If Max Samples is at 30 of 100 (30%)
and Max Time is 60 of 240 seconds (40%)
then progress bar should show 40%.

And... it would be still nice to be able to get a Time/Samples statistic when done.  It would also be great to get some statistics while rendering, maybe display them when you PAUSE the rendering.
WHY?
If I monitor my rendering, and I'm happy with the quality, I'd like to know if has been rendering for 200 Samples and 150 Seconds.  Then I might want to adjust my parameters to be around those values.  No need to set my limits at 800 samples or 20 minutes in that case.
ALSO:
Knowing both Samples and Time helps us compare image quality across machines and assess the amount of computation (samples) required to produce an image at a give resolution, and we can use the amount of time it takes to produce that image to compare system performance from system to system.

That's definitely excellent ideas !
