Author Topic: Exported normals look weird  (Read 2533 times)

When I export my textures everything looks great except the normal map that look like this:

Any idea what is wrong? It is DirectX normals and I have tried exporting with different presets but its the same.

Without much more information I won't be able to help you.
Can you show your project, or explain a basic setup to reproduce your issue ?
Does the problem happen with every project ?
Don't forget your log file. It can be exported from the Help menu of the software.

Im making new materials so i added a normal and a ao channel to my document. I put my textures in the appropriate slots in the material, add the materials to my mesh and export the textures and then the normal look as above.

Another thing, do I have to use Designer to get metallic materials to look correct? When i add a metal-mask in Painter nothing really happens, and is there no way to adjust the metalness when i added the mask?

Designer and Painter are really great programs but I can´t really get a grip on how to make new materials with the correct values and so on, do I have to use Designer or is Painter enough if I have all the textures needed. Its hard to explain things here too especially since im Swedish and English isn´t my first language :/

What is your Substance Painter version ?
Can you send me your project ?

How do you "add" the metallic map in Substance Painter ? Without further details I can't what you are doing wrong or right. In any case, you shouldn't have to sue designer to load textures/sbsar in Substance Painter.

Hi,

You don't need to use Substance Designer for the textures in Painter. You can do everything in Painter. Can you post some screen shots of the issues you are having? I'm not sure I understand what you mean by the metal mask and not being able to adjust it.

When you create the metallic channel, any layers you add will have the ability to affect the metal channel. You can use a standard layer to paint metal values or use fill layers to set a value. The biggest thing to think about is how the layers you add may affect metal channel.

Can you export the same project as in your video but with the "Document channels + Normal" preset ?
If it works with this preset, you probably have an issue in the preset that you modified. The easiest way to reinstall the default preset is to do the following procedure : https://support.allegorithmic.com/documentation/display/SPDOC/Shelf+is+empty
Don't forget your log file. It can be exported from the Help menu of the software.

That makes the normal look like this:

Hmm really strange.
Can you send me your project ?
Also can you attach your log file ? https://support.allegorithmic.com/documentation/display/SPDOC/Exporting+the+log+file

Sure, how do I send it to you?

If you can give me a download link it would be perfect (such as a dropbox link).
Or if it's small enough, by e-mail (you can find my e-mail on my profile here on the forum).

Okay I found why.
In the bottom layer of your layer stack, there is a fill layer with a empty bitmap for the Normal channel. Add a bitmap there temporarily and then remove it or just disable the channel. That's should clear the issue. :)

That seemed to do the trick! It works great now, thanks man!  ;D :o

Like I said before, I think I messed up my Unity 5 Metallic preset, you gave me a link that explained how to reset the shelf to fix that problem. But I´m still a little worried that it will delete all the materials I made? Is there really no way to backup the materials? The ones I made are regular materials and not smart materials.

The page in the FAQ should be clear enough : the Allegorithmic folder contains only the resources that we provide by default. Any resources that you create should go in the folder next to it (and not in it). If you delete the right folder you will loose nothing.

In case you are not sure, just create a copy of the main "shelf" folder.
