Is there any way I can smooth my mesh inside painter ? e.g. In Modo hit tab / shift-tab to subdivide / smooth (not increase polys).

there are no modeling controls inside painter.  Unlike Modo, or Maya, Painter is a straight up painting program, It will read in the hard or soft normal and edges you assign to you model, but that's about it.  If you want a smoother mesh you need to do that in your DCC app.

Also note that painter will not read in a open sub D mesh.  You need to convert it to polygons.  Hopefully they will in the future since other 3d paint apps like Mari 3 will read in a open sub D mesh

True, open subd seems to be progressing. But Painter still has to deal with a mesh.
