Author Topic: AMD vs Nvidia GPU  (Read 194 times)

Hello, I'm about to get a new graphics card and wanted to make it works well for Substance Painter.

I'm looking at either the RX 5600 XT or the GTX 1660 Super, they both have 6Gb VRAM.

I know that Iray rendering requires an Nvidia card since it relies on CUDA.

But since I am only interested in painting,

I want to know if I would be able to paint smoothly with th RX 5600 XT?

I plan to work with 2K textures maximum.

My understanding is that if you don't have CUDA cores you can only run IRAY on the CPU instead of the GPU. I personally always favour NVIDIA cards as a preference, and I've noticed throughout the years that NVIDIA appears to have better driver support which means less headaches for you.

If both cards are around the same price point I would still suggest NVIDIA as they're always recommended with Substance products.  :)

Thanks for the reply!

Yes I've heard about the AMD driver issues.
I'm leaning more towarda the Nvidia card.

But I just want to know if AMD cards are indeed slower in painting mode too,
not just in Iray mode.

Does the painting take advantage of CUDA as well?

What you want for painting is the highest VRAM you can get. If both cards are at 6GB you'll be fine either way. The viewport isn't the same as your render view (IRAY).

Alright, thanks a lot for the help, appreciate it.
Hopefully I can upgrade soon. But 6gb has to do for now.  :)
