Author Topic: Smart mask for mesh outer borders  (Read 5578 times)

Hello there,

I was wondering if there was a method for smart masks (or whatever else that'd do the trick) to mask around a mesh outer border. IE the 4 sides of a plane, the border of each sub-element regardless of curvature.

I'm stuck on this particular thing.

Thank you very much

I wonder if selecting via the polygons would help you do the masking.

Your profile indicates you're new here (even more than me), so let me suggest a couple videos:

Hello, thank you for your reply.
I've tried the polygon tool but unless I'm using it wrong I don't think that'll do the trick.

I'll take a close look at the video links, thank :)

Attaching a picture of what you're trying to do might help a lot, too.
Good luck.

Right justaviking,

Let's say I have multiple UV islands inside a mesh, patches of polys. I would like to have an automatic masking of the outer border of each 'patch' (each has a different ID, but in the end the same material).
The example below is manageable by hand but the real model would be too much work/time.
The desired result (quick vertex paint) would be what I'm looking for: automasking of either mesh outer border or submesh outer border. I tired to use a model with all the patches in a single mesh or each patch as a unique mesh without much different. All patches are flattened correctly on the UV space within the 0..1 range.

Something like that will require to use a substance (and Substance Designer), but even with it, it's a complex task.
Detecting borders of UV island is a bit complicated from only a texture point of view.
Don't forget your log file. It can be exported from the Help menu of the software.

I was just replying to this in case you didn't know there is a UV Border Distance generator now. Works like a charm for what you were asking for.

Thanks!

Didn't know that either, nice. Thanks for the heads up!
