Author Topic: [SOLVED] Alchemist immediately crashes after startup  (Read 2792 times)

When I start Substance Alchemist via the Launcher, I see the interface with the Bug Report window covering it; the program is locked up and I cannot use the interface or use the Bug Report window.

The system I use is an MSI GS75 with the new NVidia RTX 2070 Max-Q\32GB RAM\512GB SSD and running on an Intel i7 8750H CPU

Painter and Designer start without problems on this system.

As a side note, I've successfully installed (via Launcher) and run Substance Alchemist on my desktop system with NVidia GTX 1080Ti\64GB RAM\1TB SSD running on a Ryzen Treadripper 1950X. Is there an issue with the RTX Max-Q line of videocards?

I've attached the logfile

Can you try again with our fresh 0.5.4 release?
Did you send crash report? If so, please PM me your email.

Thanks,

Hi Guillaume,

I tried with 0.5.4. but I get the exact same crash. I couldn't use the bug report window that pops up, because the program is seized up (Windows is still running). I have attached the log.txt in the previous post. I have also send you a PM.

Please let me know what you can find out.

Cheers,

Ted

I am having this Problem also, It arose after I loaded a custom HDRI, I managed to get it working long enough to put back the default HDRI, but since then Instant crash just after Load.
same for
0.5.4, 0.5.3 and 0.5.2

Try to save in another place your Alchemist appdata. And then delete the Alchemist "appdata" folder.

    Windows: ~/AppData/Roaming/Allegorithmic/Substance Alchemist
    MacOS: ~/Library/Application Support/Allegorithmic/Substance Alchemist/
    Linux: ~/.local/share/Allegorithmic/Substance Alchemist

This Worked. Thank you.

Note that the settings for the HDRI and other options from the same panel are stored in %APPDATA%\Allegorithmic\Substance Alchemist\settings.json.  If you believe these settings are the source of the crash/freeze and don't want to purge everything, try to remove this file only.

Hi Nicky,

This is an interesting find. Because of your remark, I looked at the log file and look at this entry; it seems my setting.json is missing:

[ERROR][HubQQUserSettings] Error while reading settings : cannot open file (The system cannot find the file specified.) <file:///C:/Users/tholtmark/AppData/Roaming/Allegorithmic/Substance Alchemist/settings.json

I looked in the folder and there is in deed no settings.json file. Is this file supposed to be generated during installation of Alchemist?

Hi all,

I've managed to fix the problem myself. What I did is the following:
- I changed TdrDelay and TdrDdiDelay back to default 2 (I had it set to 60 because of Houdini);
- used unins000 in ~/Program Files/Allegorithmic/Substance Alchemist to uninstall Alchemist;
- manually removed all remaining folders/files of Alchemist from AppData;
- restarted computer;
- started Substance Launcher;
- reinstalled Substance Alchemist.

Actually we should save the settings whenever we change a setting option as well.

This worked for me also.
