Is there a way to get the alpha channel loaded in properly? Currently I'm having to import just the alpha channel as a separate image, but it would be great to import just one image and use the Alpha split node to extract it from the RGBA.

What image format are you using? png's handle alpha very weirdly, so perhaps try .tga or .tif

I had tried the source PSD and a PNG, and both had the issue.
I have just tried both TGA and TIF as per your suggestion, and both work perfectly, thanks!

FYI, png does not store transparency in a dedicated channel.
