Author Topic: Unknown reason of crashing and no UV coords  (Read 751 times)

Hi. I'm new to Substance Painter but not that new to CG in general.
I wanted to use Substance Painter to help with realism on my models (made in ZBrush and maybe at some point, Blender).

Whenever I try to open a new project and choose the mesh, it either tells me "Error. mesh has no UV coordinates", "no coords in channel 0", or it just turns itself all off.
I understandably had this issue with my previous computer specs, but now that I have a PC that exceeds the requirements, I'm still having the same issue.

The man who built my PC said that it cannot be a fault on MY end because now my PC is top notch, so it has to be an error at your end.

Is this a common glitch in the updated Spring version of Substance Painter?
Is there any way it can be fixed?

Thank you for your time.

Hope to hear back real soon.

You need to UNWRAP your model (to make a UV map) before creating the FBX/OBJ file.
I think your message is the error you get if you try to open it without a UV map.

Tried, didn't work.

I even uninstalled and reinstalled before that test.

OH and to add more to this BS, I paid full indie licence price, only to be given the Trial version.

I haven't even been able to touch the brushes and materials yet.

I am thinking that if this can't be fixed or if I can't use it after the trial time is up (27 days now), I should get a refund.
Why pay full Indie price if all i have is 30 days AND it doesn't work?

Sorry to hear that.

1) Regarding your license, see footnote in my signature at the bottom of this post.

2) Your picture didn't show up.

3) Regarding brushes and materials, it sounds like you have some pretty serious problems.  Best to attach a log file in that case, so see notes about that, too, in my signature.

Sent the contact an Email.

I'm really not happy about this.
Seeing other people able to use it with barely a problem and with ZBrush mixed too, why can't I have that too?

If you still have SP installed, it came with sample files: a MAT and sphere.  Go to file > open sample

If you can open either of those with no problem make sure your own model of sub-tools all have uv maps.  They could be sharing one uv or have their own unique uv set.  Zbrush will also export textures with flipped uvs so double check if this is why you don't see anything in SP but you know that you have uvs showing in Zbrush.

If the sample files fail to open it's likely you have hardware incompatibility issues, like you're using a graphics card not supported by SP.

Good luck.

Also, make sure you have the latest Nvidia driver.

I have a very powerful NVidia drive and it's brand new. Installed just yesterday.

As for the SP opening thing. I can open the program itself NO problem at all, but when I do New>select mesh and try to start, that is when it turns off or decline the mesh or crash saying it has stopped working.

I'm not sure what that means but if you haven't done so already, make sure you visit the Nvidia(or AMD) site and download the appropriate driver for your system:

http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us
https://support.amd.com/en-us/download

I'm sure the guy who upgraded my PC did that already.

Does that mean you don't know how?

If you decide to get a refund, do it a day BEFORE the end of the trial.
I would not want to risk doing it "on" the last the of the trial.
Definitely do NOT request a refund AFTER the trial period ends.

Hopefully you can get it to work.  The suggestion to test using the "MeetMAT" sample project is good advice. Then we will know for sure if your computer is working okay with Painter, or if it is a problem with the model.

Their samples work just fine. no problem at all. It's when I try to put in any of my objects. Even ones I unwrapped and rewrapped.

Have you tried opening a uved model that you didn't make?

Like in blender you can just apply "smart project" auto uv on the monkey head and export as fbx (confirm uvs exist by switching to uv edit viewport).  If from Zbrush, the Earthquake character model (body subtool only) in Lightbox is already uved.

I haven't tried that yet (with Blender). I thought SP was supposed to make this stuff easier.

Doesn't it defeat the purpose of Creativeness if you can only work on pre made samples?
