Author Topic: Color ID - Add mask with color selection - Issue  (Read 10077 times)

Hi all,

I am a noob to Substance Painter :-[ so firstly thanks in advance for any help. :)

I apologse if this has been dicscussed elsewhere, but after a practically the whole day messing around with SP and googling for answers and getting nowhere, I am resorting to seeking the expertise of you good folk here.

So with all that out the way here is my issue:
I have a very simple model of a sci-fi wall where the detail for it are all fake 3d panels, I created a 'colour id' map for it in photoshop.

The problem I am having is that no matter what color I select the masking always applies to the 'blue' area. (please see image)

So are there specific settings I should use when exporting the .png image from photoshop, or am I attempting to do something that is not possible?

Thanks.

First, the  color map will need to be appropriate (line up with) your UV map.
Second, it should work if it's imported as an actual color map.
Third, I'm not sure what else at the moment, so just one and two for now.

Hi, thanks for the reply.

Yes I have the color id imported into the project, and assigned to the ID in TextureSet Settings, and it all lines up with the UV :)

It seams the issue is to do with the color pickers in substance and photoshop not matching.

If I manually set the color it works fine - the problem is that I have to find the color by guess work, which just makes for a pretty disrupted workflow.

Hopefully the pictures explain it.

Very strange.  I would think whatever color it is in Painter would work when you pick it.  Somebody above my limited skill set will need to lend a hand.

Yeah, I would have thought that too.

It also doesn't have to be the exact color for the mask to work. So like the orangey color in the pics (for the centre column) the rgb is 255, 66, 0, however if I get something like 245, 66, 0 substance still thinks it is the right color and will apply the mask to the centre column.

So as long as the color I guess at is close it applies the mask, but it should have to be the exact same color.

So spent hours trying to work it out, tried making the ID using different colors, tried various png settings when exporting the color ID from PhotoShop, even updating my graphics card drivers, but no go.

Seams just weird to me lol.

OldFlak....

So, I am guessing this issue is unique to my setup.

Anyone have any idea where to start to troubleshoot the problem? It has me stumped  ???  ???

Perhaps this topic should be in the bugs\issues section, a mod can perhaps move it - thanks.

I have tested this with a simple object and an ID map created in Photoshop, and have encountered no issues. Works as expected.

Can you upload the Painter file somewhere?

Yeah, okie dokie, will do so over the weekend - has been a long day today :)

Can I upload it here?

OldFlak....

Yes, you should be able to attach it here.
I'm not sure what the file size limit is, but it I'd try that first.

When typing a post here, just below the text input area, see "Attachments and other options" and click on it.

Hi all :)

OK here be my discoveries with this issue.

If I start a clean project, create all the maps etc, add a bunch of fill layers of various colors, and then 'Add mask by color selection' for each of them. It all works fine - the mask is correctly applied to each area.

Now all I have to do to create the issue, is zoom in\out of the model a few times, and add\delete\edit layers, or put the fill layers in a folder and apply the mask to a folder,

Now not only does the color selection not work correctly, but zoom no longer works properly either - like I can zoom out as far as I want but can only zoom in to about the default size of the model (can't see any reference to actual zoom percentage - lol noob)

Edit: Tried uploading project here but no go, lost the post and all - lol (uploading to dropbox, will post a link when done :)

Thanks for sharing the file.

You seem to have some "invisible" geometry that's getting in the way.  Actually, it's only "half invisible" because you can see it from the other direction.

That is probably what gets in the way of you zooming in.  If I orient my view so the camera goes "between" the two side panels, I can zoom in very closely to the grill at the bottom of the main wall.  But if I rotate my view a bit, the camera "runs into" the back of one of the side panels, and I cannot zoom in close to the grill.

It is also probably responsible for you always "picking" the wrong thing with the color picker. too.  You're picking the color from a side panel, even though it's not being displayed on the screen.

@justaviking - thanks for looking at this.

Yeah, now that makes sense.

Lol - I thought it would be something so blindinly obviuos that I couldn't see it! :)

I will play some more with this today - when the grand kids are not hounding me for attention :)

Thanks for your help.

OldFlak....

Glad I could help.
Enjoy the grand kids.  :)

Hi all :)

Yeah, that indeed was the solution - thanks a lot justaviking and Volker - much appreciated.

Lol - Other parts to that model - the floor for example all worked fine so I thought perhaps there was an issue with the model itself, so I started looking for rogue geometry - wow talk about a wild goose chase - turns out the goose was me!

Many thanks for your time and help.
