Author Topic: Why map channel mapping only?  (Read 1545 times)

Why does substance map in 3ds max has only map channel mapping only? Object XYZ has more benefits fo procedurals and it could add much more power to substance map. Is it not possible technically or it has no commercail reason? May be it will be in substance plugin official release?

Hi, you should be able to modify the mapping as for bitmaps by selecting the substance node itself and switch to "Planar from Object XYZ".

Oh, no, no, no. "Planar from Object XYZ" is quite different from "Object XYZ" that has native procedurals in 3ds Max.

Planar from Object XYZ Uses planar mapping based on the object's local coordinates and it is useless:

And this is how "Object XYZ" of native 3ds Max noise map works:

Substance files have the same possibilities/limitations (and mapping modes) than bitmaps; this mapping is only available for 3ds Max 3D noises, it's not something you can do using substance files (that generate 2D images in the end).
So it's indeed a technical constraint as the technique is completely different.
Regarding the "Planar from Object XYZ" it can be useful for tri planar projection (and maybe a way to achieve what you want using a custom shader network?).

I see, Thanks for explanation. Our teacher in the university mentioned Simbiont DarkTree as smth remotely similair to Substance Designer and DarkTree material for V-ray which has "Object XYZ" as Max's native noises. As it appears remotely similairity even far more remote.
