It's a new open source file format developed by the Khronos Group(the people who make Vulkan and OpenGL). You can find information on it here And here's a article by a Godot developer explaining its advantages I know this might not be a huge priority since neither Unity or Unreal support it yet. But I say the sooner we can make the industry less dependent on FBX the better.

We are looking closely at GLTF, we'll likely have more information soon.
