Will trademarks cause any problems?

I always find questions like that to be interesting, and have seen them discussed many times in various forums.

For "art" you seem to have more freedom.

If you are making characters (physical or electronic) for commercial purposes, then you quite limited.

As a non-lawyer, I would think we have quite a bit of latitude here, even if there are prizes involved.

But also keep in mind they would want to possibly use it for marketing purposes. If the rights holder can sue or ask for compensation, then expect it to be a no go. There are definitely some blurred lines as to whats safe or not, but also expect them not to take any chances either.

Unless you used a logo or an actual brand name, you should be fine. Fan art or derivative art is allowed.

Yes, if Allegorithmic wants to use it as their mascot, then I agree that's a good point.

But for the other 99% of the entries, we should be good.  Jeremie's comments helped, too.  They should also be able to showcase "look what the artists can do with out product" quite liberally, even if there are some obvious references to other works.
