@hijinx,

I'm really not an expert on this.  You might want to post in the "Painter - Discussion" forum area.  You can tap into more help and can have a nice long discussion there.  I don't mind you asking here, my concern is that I don't have a quick answer.  But I'll share what thoughts I do have.

If the top layer is smooth, so the reflections are not lumpy and distorted, then I think you'd simply have to remove all height values from that area.  Looking at your screen shot, it appears you have a mask already.  What happens if you add a new fill layer and put it on top of the others (in that folder), turn off all channels except height, and let height be "zero."  That should remove all lumps.

However, you'll also lose any appearance of depth for the underlying carbon fiber ribbons.  I wonder if it would work to make an ambient occlusion map based on something, but I'm getting in over my head here.  I would have to learn and figure this out, I've not done it before.

It sounds like what you want is a smooth clear-coat over a non-smooth surface.  Sounds like a job for MDL stuff in Designer.  Or a transparent layer would be nice, but we can't use Opacity for "Meet MAT," so that removes that option.

There is probably some really clever way to accomplish what you want, but I'm not thinking of anything brilliant at the moment.  My best guess is what I wrote above, but I suspect you'll be disappointed when everything gets too flat looking.

P.S.
Even though it's not the look you seek, I think your image looks real nice.  :)

P.P.S
Ah, the "golfer" MAT.  Intersting concept.  I'm looking forward to seeing him.

I just got in from work and I am going to try some of the suggestions you made. That carbon fiber material in the link you posted is exactly the look I am seeking. I only have a few more hours until the contest deadline so I will have to come up with another idea for the look.

You say you are not an expert but the comprehensive answer you provided says different as far as I am concerned.

Thanks so much for the great reply and best wishes in the contest!

First... I'm glad I'm able to offer some help.  I know random things, and sometimes creatively extrapolate.  Not every idea is a success, but I hope it all works out great for you.

Second... about the deadline...

I only have a few more hours until the contest deadline...

The HazMat is really great :D Cheers!

Hey, you got some nice cartoony feel going there yourself.. great choice of character ;) ... excited to see the final

Nice idea man! Maybe try add a bit more wrinkles. And good idea to add green line as separator.

Thanks for the nice comments.
About the wrinkles, I'm considering it.  The reference images from Monsters Inc. show that they have very few creases, but I tried a few (very few) anyway, mostly because I recently did that on my Happy Hippy, and because I felt compelled to add something to the model.  I'm not entirely happy with them, and want to touch them, then I'll see about adding more.

I did add some subtle and overall large-scale height variation.  I think that helped, but then used the Smudge tool and started to get some odd, sharp streaky artifacts (especially under the arms).  That distracted me for a while, but I have a new idea on how to address that.

I planned on having an updated picture or two to post.  Yeah, you know what often happens to plans...

Last night, I spent about one hour working on the project.
One hour.
Not the five or six I imagined.
One small, itty-bitty, little hour.
And here I sit at my day-job (taking a little break), with my fun computer idling at home, waiting for me.
Grrr....

About all I got done was re-doing the hoses to give them an "accordion" look.  I didn't save any pictures to upload because I kept assuming I'd get more done.

(Sorry for the rant.  I feel a little bit better now.)

I still hope to get some refinements done tonight, but I also want to upload my entry before the literal last minute.

Here's a quick note of what a did last night (the ridges on the hoses).  Yeah, a very small update.
I also changed the fabric on the sock a couple days ago, and added some wrinkles to it too.

Done!

It didn't change much since my last post, but it's done.

I know there are a thousand flaws and room for improvement, but in spite of that, I feel good about it and am happy to be done with two hours to spare.

It has been a huge amount of fun, and I learned quite a bit along the way.

THANK YOU Allegorithmic for hosting this great activity.
THANK YOU to all the other participants for all your great entries.

Here is my "Code 2319" MAT displayed in my Sketchfab account, which I created today specifically so my MAT would have a nice home.
