Introducing ~~M.A.T. The Material Assistance Technician.~~

Previous Concept:

The concept is a bit rough, but some elements are more exploratory rather than set in stone, the emissive areas on the hand and base for example. For body material, I am playing around with the idea of either a clean plastic, semi-worn metal, or perhaps that which comes across as more bendable (rubber? Silicon?).

Some minor use of normal map decals might be used to add a bit of "substance" (pun intended) to the surface.

Since M.A.T is a bit fun and quirky, he may choose to decorate his body with some stickers or markings. Maybe a bumper sticker for the Substance abuse hotline... joking! or am I?

I'll be posting progress as well as further developments here. The concept may take some macro level changes depending on the results I am getting.

Update #1: Finally managed to make time to continue working on this. Had a surprise project come up. Never realized how much the workflow for SP has progressed since I last used it. Coming from 3D Coat and Mari Indie, it definitely takes some re-adjustment in the way one approaches the texturing process.

Still playing around with the materials for M.A.T. and concepting in 3D, however there are a few looks I am starting to favor. The latter means moving away from the original concept.

Further exploring materials. Scrapping the old portal inspired concept in favor of hazMAT (i can haz?).

Liking the heated metal look. Body feels more like a suit rather than a hard shell. The Duct tape material on Substance Share is just too much fun to use. Getting closer to figuring out where I want to take this, also a bit of learn as you go for SP. =)

LOL... just moments ago, I was telling my wife about one of the concepts still in my head, and said I couldn't believe, with a name like "MAT," that nobody has done a HazMAT yet. Then about two clicks later I saw your post.

I still might try one, but I was having too much trouble getting the folds in the suit to look right, and with a simple coloring scheme (in my design) that would have been a major feature of the outfit.

Glad you're doing this. Looking forward to seeing more.

Got a chance to sit down and work on Mat's concept some more today.
Its moving in the right direction.

Need to keep fiddling with the rubber/plastic suit material (folds are indeed a bit annoying), then hit up the straps properly along with some boots and gloves. Right now they are just masked out quickly with a fill layer underneath. Head and base get a revamp after the body.

Fixed some aspects of the Material used for the suit. Pushing for a more "fun" and stylized look.
Torn between creating a belt with straps, or sticking with the zipper look. Decal is temporary.
Hands and Legs prepped for the boot n glove combo. Then off to deal with the rest of the head.

Update #5: hazMAT

Remade the zipper and jacket, fixed some areas I was not entirely happy with. Pushed the normal map a bit to give more depth around the legs and arms, as well as on either size of the zipper. Boots are almost done. Should have most of the day to work on this so, i'll see how far I can get.

Moving on to the head now. If there is time, i'll back for another polish pass on the body.

Wrapping up the head. There are a few variations for the front half of the head. This is one of them (its a bit off centered, will fix if I end up keeping it). Should be able to wrap it all up by the end of tomorrow.

Messing around with decals. Added Stitching for boots & gloves. Settled on a head design.

Nice work. Thanks for sharing the white version. I think I actually prefer that face.

Both versions well done, and I really appreciate how well you did the baggy suit. My struggle with loose clothing helps me to notice and admire it when it's done well.

Thanks again for the positive feedback and appreciation. I liked the white too, but felt it wasn't iconic (recognizable enough) as the yellow hazmat suit. Ultimately I went with the face, as it makes "MAT" seem more like a character/person, rather than an inanimate object. It was a tough call though.
