Author Topic: why can't I paint ?  (Read 19667 times)

I recently started working with substance painter so I'm pretty new to this
I was watching the tutorials on the youtube channel , and I wanted to just give it a try ,so I created a simple box in 3dsmax ,exported it as fbx file , and created a new scene in painter and used the box as my mesh .
and I baked some maps using the substance painter , and I wanted to just give the base color a simple brush stroke ,but it didn't work .
I opened the sample file named fire hydrant , and it goes by default to the opacity layer , but my brush works there .
what am I doing wrong ?
Also , when I add a fill layer of any color , the box is painted just fine. only the brushes don't work on it

That's by design, and is pretty much the definition of a "fill layer."

The entire layer is filled with a single color (or material).  You can control it via a "mask" rather than painting.  There are some good tutorials on YouTube for that.

Soon the basics will fall into place, and you'll be having a lot of fun.  Good luck.

the problem is not with the fill layer .the problem is that the brush on a simple layer doesn't work the way I want it to.
it starts to paint these really small squares on the surface of the box , and it doesn't have a smooth stroke

Look at the log: your UVs are not correct: they are shared between 2 UV spaces

What GPU are you running? Make sure you meet the requirements and if you do make sure the correct GPU is being used:

if you're using anything under the Smart Materials tab then you'll want to bake your mesh maps first prior to using them.
