Author Topic: GTX - 1080 - Iray  (Read 5591 times)

I was expecting to be without Iray until Siggraph when I installed my new GTX 1080FE  - just tried it tho and it works fine. I'm running the current 368.39 drivers with the 1080 - no Iray issues. Were they just anticipating it wouldn't work or did they roll out the Iray support early?

Dumb question, but is it running on the CPU or the GPU?

If it is indeed running on the 1080, I'm very happy for you, and am jealous.  I am looking forward to finding on in stock so I can get one too.

Yeah, it's probably running on the CPU. To be sure you can check the log file of Painter, Iray print some information here near the beginning.
Don't forget your log file. It can be exported from the Help menu of the software.

Ah - right, might be the CPU. The log section in the viewport doesn't say anything about Iray. I've attached the exported log - I can't tell anything  - lots of references to the GPU...  :o ;D

Yeah - what a crazy way to release a product! I happened to catch one in stock by stalking newegg early on release day. Don't worry - it will normalize soon and there will be plenty of stock of both the 1080s and 1070s. I can tell you it's a noticeable upgrade from my 970 - in SP as well as the other 3d apps I use. SP is crazy fast now as far as viewport and material loading.  :D

About 10 minutes after my last post, the 1080 (EVGA 08G-P4-6183-KR) was in stock at Newegg.com, but when I clicked Add To Cart, I got an error saying it was removed from my cart due to insufficient inventory.  After trying a couple of times, it went back to being listed as Out of Stock.

So close!!!

Back to your Iray experience, monitor your CPU usage.  Iray totally saturates my 4 cores (8 threads).  When the 1080 is supported, you should see a massive(!!!) performance increase for Iray.  I hope to be right there with you by then.

CPU went 100% when rendering with Iray - cased closed. ;)

The wait for siggraph continues...

As expected :) :

Thanks! I did see that when I looked back over the log. Siggraph is late July - I guess that's not too long away. :)

Okay - so I posted the question, on the Nvidia Iray forum, of how close are we to getting the driver support for Iray. Thread here: https://forum.nvidia-arc.com/showthread.php?14632-Will-the-Geforce-GTX-1080-be-supported&highlight=1080

Here is the response received:

It took us longer than expected. But Iray itself has the support.
We need to release a version of the Iray SDK and then integrate it into the plugins.

I totally understand that you are keen to use your newest hardware but I need to ask for your patience here. And for your understanding that even if we work for the same company we need time to adapt the software part to the new hardware and drivers. We want to deliver plugins that are well tested.

Again, sorry for letting you wait

I'm confused - is this a driver we are waiting for (to use GPU Iray in SP) or will you need the SDK in order to configure Iray to work with the GTX10** cards??  ???

Thank you!

I am eagerly looking forward to this, too.

I managed to get my hands on the EVGA "SC GAMING ACX 3.0" model at Newegg.com for $650, and am loving it.

Since this is just a hobby, I have no urgent "need" for Iray support, but am really looking forward to see how much faster it is compared to CPU rendering on my I7-3770k.  I upgraded from an aging 1GB AMD card, so I've never run Iray on any graphics card yet.

Speaking of Iray on the GTX 1080...

I wish this thread

It's great that it's pinned, but unlocking it would be a nice way to keep the conversation in one thread instead of several.
